Research
Insects use their taste system in the same way than vertebrates, to detect nutritive molecules and to avoid potentially toxic molecules. They also use taste to detect molecules related to intra or interspecific interactions (sex, social, ennemies) or to analyze their environment. I am interested in understanding how this system evolves, in particular how bitterness relates to toxicity. This research has applications in crop protection (searching for aversive substances against insects, designing food or pheromonal traps), and to insect rearing as feed or food (to adapt insects to available biological resources). More specifically, we are interested in evaluating the feeding range of insects which can be used as a source of proteins to feed animals or humans.
Techniques
Extracellular electrophysiology (taste, olfaction); behavior (feeding activities – multiCAFE, PER; locomotion activity – Trikinetics)
