Agroecological and evolutionary transitions

The aim of my research is to develop systems to analyze and accompany past present and future changes in agro-ecological systems. They include a disciplinary part and an interventionist and participatory part. The disciplinary part concern the phylogeographic and co-evolutionary responses of insects and diseases associated to agriculture. The research intervention part concerns the development of agro-ecological cooperatives between producers, clients, transporters and researchers. They associate services for the ecological transition of small scale farmers in the areas of logistics, and participatory certification and systems of information and research for decision support from local to territorial scales.

Disicplinary research

The genetic and phylogenetic systems studied aim to better understand and predict coevolutionary trajectories of species and communities associated to agriculture.

Coevolution in agriculture

Genetic sytems governing immune interactions between Drosophila and its parasitoids and results of experimental coevolution in laboratory allowed to explain the geographic patterns observed in Africa. The genetic systems combine aspecific resistance or virulence characterized by important phylogenetic inertia, hiding or not specific gene-for-gene interactions, that lead to arm races between partners. Similar systems of genetic interactions have been characterized in the case of the parasitoid Cotesia sesamiae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) agent of biological control against cereal stemborers (Lepidoptera : Noctuidae) in sub-saharan Africa. The geographic patterns have been analyzed through experimental infestations in Kenya and through molecular markers, neutral, and associated to adaptation to host. The adaptation markers are genes of polydnavirus symbionts integrated in wasp chromosomes and injected in the lepidopteran host during oviposition, expressed in the host and responsible for host immune suppression to the benefit of the parasitoid. Several project aimed to study the genetic mechanisms and followup dynamics of adaptation and specialization in biological control operations or in natural endemic biological control systems.

Environmental demogenetics

Population genetic data inform on dynamics of species in response to space and environment. The formalization and the inference of these models from genetic environmental and social data allow to establish more integrative scenario to predict biodiversity responses to environmental changes. But existing models assume ideal populations in general homogeneous or in low number and do not account in a formalized manner the relationships to heterogeneous environment or to the connectivity network that organize them. My project is to infer this type of models within the theoretical framework of graph theory or coalescent theory. I use functions linking spatial, environmental data and social networks to gene dynamics. We analyze biological control operations, or plant pathogen genetic surveys to infer genetic, spatio-environemental models.

Intervention research

Agroecological cooperatives

For these demogenetic models to be adopted they are integrated in our new agroecomakers system in my expatriation project in Colombia in the BIOINCA international lab and with the CCAFS program agroecology for climate action in Latin America. Agromakers supports the creation of cooperatives between actors of production, transport and consumption. The application is adapted to peasants with voice recognition system and to low connectivity regions. The products of the cooperation will be (1) Logistic support with production and offer anticipation models (2) Participatory certification ; the producers will collect information’s on ecological indicators (insect traps, microbial activity of the soil, and carbon content estimation), and the cooperative members accompany the data collections, (3) participatory research to test agro-ecological hypotheses on production. The economic model is reducing logistic, research and certification costs and retributing commons through a point system. The cooperatives are launched in Colombia Perú and Ecuador within the BIOINCA international LAB.
